This platform is dedicated to Ukrainian artists in Finland — a new artistic community within the Finnish art scene, united by their national background and the traumatic experience of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

We have interviewed Ukrainian artists and representatives of the Finnish art world, and observed as well as participated in artistic events featuring Ukrainian art in Finland. In our conversations with artists, we focused on the changes and challenges affecting their professional, artistic, civic, and place identities in the context of war, war-related displacement, and adaptation to both the professional milieu and everyday life in Finland.

We have followed the different trajectories of “emplacement” developed by Ukrainian artists. This platform showcases these artists and their artworks, offering glimpses into their life stories alongside our own analytical — and often deeply autobiographical — reflections on Ukrainian art in Finland.

We believe that this platform can serve as both a supportive digital resource for this emerging artistic community and a means of positioning Ukrainian artists within the Finnish art scene, connecting them with diverse stakeholders.

Finally, we develop this platform as a collection of reflections on “war-ning art” — both as a distinct field of artistic practice and as a curatorial and cultural agenda addressing global crises, violence, displacement, and war. It is an agenda oriented toward societal impact, collective reflection, and healing through artistic knowledge.

Our team

The platform has been developed collaboratively by researchers and artists on an equal basis, ensuring inclusivity, empowerment, and a personal touch. The core team consists of two members:

Oleksandra Nenko
Ukrainian sociologist, Doctor of Sociology; Collegium Researcher at the Turku Institute for Advanced Studies, University of Turku; member of the Landscape Studies team; and Visiting Researcher at the University of the Arts Helsinki.

Ton Melnyk
Helsinki-based Ukrainian queer and activist artist.
